Fishing Panama
Panama Is Happening! By Richard Castaneda, aka Cass

With many outstanding fishing trips under my belt to this friendly and beautiful tropical country I now consider myself a Panama Veteran. The fishing on each trip has been just short of amazing and just when you think it can’t get any better, it does. One of my favorite spots is on the Tuna Coast off Punta Mala near the village of Pedasi where the groups that I have escorted there have had outstanding catches of Yellowfin Tuna to 40 pounds, Wahoo to 70 pounds, Rooster Fish to 52#, Cubera Snapper to 52 pounds, Amberjack to 55#, Sierra to 12 pounds, Dorado, Black Marlin, Sailfish, Rainbow Runner, Bluefin Trevally, Barracuda and a huge variety of Jacks. The prime fishing season runs from April through October and as amazing as it may seem all the fishing is with in 8 miles of the beach.

Pedasi is a small fishing village about a 5 hour drive north of Panama City on the Pacific side of the country. This area does not get a lot of sport fishing pressure with the exception of a few Panamanian sport fishermen. The drive north is interesting as it takes you through numerous small villages, farming communities and lush tropical landscapes. The only motel in Pedasi is the Motel Residencial; a vintage motel consisting of 20 air conditioned rooms that reminded me of the type of hotels that were available to anglers traveling to Baja in the 70’ and early 80’s. The commercial pangas available resemble the typical 22ft Baja panga, powered by a 45hp to 65hp outboards. The hot fishing spots are all within a one hour boat ride from launch site, they consist of Punta Mala, the small islands at Los Frailles, Punta Puerco and an assortment of other productive high spots. Trolling, casting top water lures, fly fishing and jigging iron are all productive methods of catching fish.

Pesca Panama Sportfishing - 7 days trips aboard a mothership
Imagine a fishing destination where you can catch seemingly unlimited numbers and species of world class saltwater game fish — a fishing destination so remote that it’s subjected to very little fishing pressure. This is Coiba Island along Panama’s Pacific coast. The Coiba Island archipelagos of Coiba, Montuosa, Jicarón, and the numerous smaller islands surrounding Panama’s world famous Hannibal Bank boasts the most productive, heart-pounding inshore/offshore big game fishing to be found anywhere. This is the world of Pesca Panama Sportfishing where, as our guests, you will be treated to a saltwater fishing adventure like no other in an exotic landscape of pristine ocean waters and lush tropical islands that, for most, exceeds anything they might have ever imagined.
Offshore Fishing - World class offshore action is often to be enjoyed when fishing legendary Hannibal Bank and Montuosa Island. Monster Black and Blue Marlin, schools of Wahoo and giant Yellowfin Tuna, plus huge Pacific Sailfish and Dorado congregate to feast in these bait-rich waters.
Inshore Fishing - Panama’s Coiba Island National Marine Park is home to some of the world’s most explosive inshore fishing action. Aggressive predators such as Cubera Snapper and Roosterfish readily attack top water plugs cast along the many sandy beaches and rocky coastlines.
Bottom Fishing - Here, many of our West Coast anglers prefer deep jigging, while our East Coast fishermen often choose to drop down with either live or dead baits. Both methods produce rod-bending, knee-buckling strikes from the likes of big Snappers, Grouper and Amberjack.
Fly Fishing - For the avid fly fisherman, offshore bait-and-switch for Sailfish, along with sight casting to Dorado, provides phenomenal seasonal flyrodding. Typically, the Dorado action is at its peak in December, with Sailfish peaking in January. Added year-round excitement can be found flycasting the often flat-calm waters on the backside of Coiba Island for big Snappers, Jacks and Snook.

Fishing Guatemala
Guatemala is recognized as the home of the most prolific fishery for Sailfish in the world. The boats regularly have over 50 shots per day in the peak season, and you can anticipate 15-25 shots on a "regular day". Nothing is ever guaranteed in fishing, but this is about as close as you can get if you dream about casting to lit-up Sailfish within 20 feet of the stern, multiple hookups and constant action.
There is also good action for Dorado and Tuna. You may also have the opportunity to hook up to Blue Marlin in considerable numbers during the season. Prime season runs from October until June, although the fish are resident all year round.
