Cass Tours General Tackle List

We constantly get questions on what type of fishing tackle is needed to fish the waters off Baja and mainland Mexico. I can only be guided by past experiences in getting together the right equipment to make your fishing trip a huge success.

Rods: 4 rods; Fisrt is a 5 1/2’ trolling rod with all/ or tip and bottom roller guides in a 50# to 80# class, a 6’-6 1/2’ rod 20# to 50# class, 6’ to 7’ rod 10# to 40# class and 1 6’ or 6 1/2’ bass rod.

Reels: 6/0 reel, either lever drag or star drag with 60# to 80# test mono, 4/0 reel, either lever drag or star drag with 40# or 50# test mono, Penn 500 or carparable reel with 20# to 30# test mono, a small bass type or spinning outfit reel with 10# to 15# mono.

Lures: Marlin luers in bleeding mackeral (orange/yellow), Mean Joe Green (green/black), Dorado (green/yellow) or (blue/white), hot pink and black and purple. Tuna feathers in yellow/green, blue/white, red/white, black/purple and all white. Magnum rapalas CD14 and CD18 sizes in green or blue mackeral, brown/white, purple/black and orange colors. A few iron lures in chrome, blue/chrome, blue/white, green/yellow and all white. Two medium sized marauders in ninja and Tony the Tiger colors.

Terminal Tackle: An assortment of hooks 4# to 10/0 preferrably lazer type such as mustard, Owner, Eagle Claw or Gamakatsu. One roll each of leader material in 100# or 125# test and 200# to 250# test. Sampo ball bearing swivelsand snaps in size 4 (100#) and size 6 (200#), 30’ roll of 135# 49-strand stainless steel cable. Yozuri (lucky joe) bait rigs.

Rod Carriers: While transporting your rods on the airline, you should protect them with a good quality rod carrier. You can either purchase a rod carrier or make one out of 4” PVC pipe cut 2” longer than your longest rod and with a permanent cap on one end and screwable cap on the other. I secure the rods with velcro straps and put the rod butts pointing out so that they hit the end of the tube and the tips don’t.

With this list, you should be able to tackle just about every species of fish to be found in Mexican waters. Good luck and tight lines...Cass.
